Words Words Words

The official talking of the wee man has begun. The usual suspects of "mama" and "dada" are included in the repertoire, however, a new word has sprung up.

As many of you know, we have a wonderful nanny who hails from Nicaragua. Her native tongue is Spanish and she muddles through with the English. DH is more insistent on her speaking English, but I like the fact that I'm learning yet another language so I am trying hard to learn Spanish. I do not pretend to think that she speaks English to him, why should she when he understands her perfectly in Spanish.

The new word that he is spouting often is "gat." This is not to be confused with your nine or neener as Dr. Dre would espouse. Instead, it is the beautiful "Spanglish" word for cat. You see - gato in Spanish is cat. We have two cats, Merlin and Hugo, who are are 10 and 11 respectively. My assumption for how his new word came about is that he hears both English and Spanish at home. So it would make sense that by combining the two languages a similar sounding word will result.

The big birthday party will take place this weekend. I do not think that the Washington weather will cooperate, but that's OK. Friends and family will be in attendance. It is amazing to me how many children will be there. So much has changed in the past few years and of course family additions are always fun.

I'm not sure if the wee man realizes or really even cares if there are goody bags and a pinata. Yes, a pinata. :) His allergies preclude him from have the traditional cake and ice cream, however I have found a wonderful vegan bakery in Columbia Heights that can make a cake that will suit him just fine. Grandma MB is also happy to help C with the cake since she doesn't due the milk thing either! If you ever need a cake made without eggs, dairy, and wheat, please go to Sticky Fingers bakery. And if you are in their store, try the Cinnamon Rolls - they are yummy!

We'll post pictures of the festivities for all of you who can't be here in person. The gratuitous "see what the 1 year old will do to the birthday cake" photo will also be available :)

Happy Thursday to you all!
